Untitled 5 (Funeral)

Sachiko’s funeral was a quiet affair. She was more infamous than anything else; her methods were questionable, her motivations murky, her background distasteful. Her reputation had been marred beyond repair, and not even providing her husband with the heirs he so desperately needed had not redeemed her in the eyes of the public. Not even dying for them had redeemed her in the eyes of the public. As a result, her public memorial was attended by only those who knew her professionally, and they kept their heads down. There was one speech given and everyone offered cool, disinterested condolences to her family. Secretly, everyone thought the children would be better off being raised by someone else. Perhaps the father would remarry, and this time find a woman with more integrity.
Her private funeral was even smaller, even more silent. Her immediate family attended, and the surviving members of her squad, and her commanding officer. That was it. Even the press stayed away, partially because the date was never announced and partially because no one wanted to be seen acting too interested in her. Despite that, word spread fairly quickly that her mistress had dared to show her face, dressed in mourning colors with her head bowed and her face hidden in the manner of a widow. It was scandalous. It was disrespectful, for even one as lowborn and lowlifed as Sachiko Kobayashi deserved some respect in death.
